Do You Show Symptoms Of Diabetes? By Eunice Gaelek If you suffer with diabetes, your body is unable to control sugars in the blood. You may have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. These two forms of the disease are similar, and differ in the speed at which they manifest in the body.
Symptoms develop rather quickly with type 1 diabetes. This form of the disease comes about when the body experiences an autoimmune response that creates an attack on beta cells in the pancreas. A person with type 1 diabetes will have no natural insulin production. Symptoms develop quickly and the disease rapidly progresses. Early detection and prompt treatment is essential, or the patient may fall into a diabetic coma. Type 1 diabetes is an irreversible condition that requires a lifetime of insulin supplements.
The situation is quite different with type 2 diabetes. In this form of the disease, some insulin is still being produced. There is a natural release of insulin, however it may not be enough for the body to process, or the cells may have become resistant and unable to utilize the available insulin. In type 2 diabetes the symptoms develop more slowly and grow progressively worse over an extended period of time, and it may be years before a diagnosis is in place.
Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes present similar symptoms. You must be aware of the signs, and speak with your doctor if you feel that you might be developing diabetes.
* Persistent Thirst: A consistent feeling of thirst may indicate the progression of diabetes. This can also be caused by other factors, but it's worth talking to your doctor to rule out the possibility of diabetes.
* Lethargy and Drowsiness: Fatigue is a common complaint for anyone with a busy lifestyle. If you're often drowsy and lack energy, however, you should point this out to your doctor.
* Frequent Need to Urinate: Drinking more naturally leads to frequent urination. Diabetes is one of many conditions that can cause frequent urination, so check with your doctor to be sure. If the urine smells sweet, it may indicate that higher levels of sugar are present in your system.
* Altered Vision: The increased sugar levels caused by diabetes can damage small blood vessels throughout the body, including the eyes. The tiny vessels within the eyes can be harmed,
and you vision may be affected. Any sudden changes in vision should be promptly investigated.
* Sweet smelling breath: Again, this is linked to the high sugar levels. If you or your friends notice a sweet smell to your breath, it should be investigated as a possible sign of diabetes.
* Increase in Appetite: Many factors can bring about an increase in appetite, but it is worth noting as one of the potential signs of diabetes. This is of particular concern if the increased appetite is coupled with unexplained weight loss.
* Breathing Difficulties: Labored or heavy indicates many respiratory conditions, but it can also be a sign of diabetes that must not be ignored.
* Unconsciousness or Stupor: These are often the final signs of diabetes. Once these symptoms are presented, it can be too late to help the patient.
If you show any of these signs of diabetes, or a combination of symptoms, you may have cause for concern. Diabetes can be successfully treated if caught early. Ignoring the signs of diabetes, however, can lead to more serious complications and additional health problems. Recognize the signs of diabetes and get immediate medical attention.
